Thanks Again Baltimore Magazine!!!

Wow! We made the "society pages" for Baltimore Magazine this month! When the Made in Baltimore Issue dropped in December, we had a release party and the magazine came and took some pics. The best part is if you missed the original issue, there is info on how to get your copy. B.E.S.T. is so on a roll! That's me to the right of Jen M. (our fearless leader) holding the blow up of the cover. Annnnd in the top picture, that's a lovely shot of my scalp- thank goodness I washed my hair that day!

The Walter's and Me...

Part of my motivation to take this year off from teaching was to be able to focus more on my metals and art jewelry education. I have been taking course through MICA's Jewelry program off and on for about 3 years now. The problem was that many of the courses were offered during the day, and I sort of hit a wall where I either continued on and really went for it- taking as many courses as I could and focusing on them, or continued on taking a course here and there and not really having the time for them. I was set to register for "Perfecting Basic Skills and Metal Forming 2, when imagine my surprise when I received word from the program director that I was being "invited" to participate in a special collaborative project and class with the Walters Art Museum! I had seen the listing in the course catalog, it was very mysterious in it's description, and I figured it was only being offered to the very advanced students. It seems that some of the museum board members are fans of Project Runway (as they should be!) and were intrigued by last years episode where the designers went to the MET and created garments inspired by the collection. They figured, why can't we do something similar in conjunction with the new exhibit Bedazzled: 5,000 Years of Jewelry and Art Blooms, which is a juried fine art jewelry fair. So students from the jewelry program as well as several selected from the fibers program, have been challenged with creating work that is inspired by the Walter's Ancient collection. And get this- the work will be displayed runway style during the preview party for Art Blooms, and then will be on display in the museum for a brief amount of time afterwards! April Wood, our fabulous instructor, is also challenging us with creating work that pushes the boundary of wearable art. I am so excited I can hardly wait to get started! Last night we had a slide lecture on contemporary jewelry and fashion and then brain stormed as group. I'll be sure to update you all as it progresses!

It's Here!

1000 Jewelry Inspirations! A new jewelry book by Sandra Salamony. I received my complimentary copy in the mail today! It is really a nice book, lot's of interesting work, great pictures, new ideas.

And look! I am number 939! That's my "Autumn Leaves" Pendant. Copper and new gold, pierced, sawed and riveted together. The photo came out a wee contrasty, but I can't complain too much- I'm published!
You can order your copy from Amazon here.

1000 Jewelry Inspirations

Here is the cover for "1000 Jewelry Inspirations!" Although my piece did not make the cover, none the less, it is included (somewhere!) in the book. I submitted a copper and nu-gold pendant that was comprised of layered and pierced out metals, and then cold connected together. I'd include a picture, buuuutttt, you'll have to wait for the book release to see it! You can pre-order it from Amazon here, and I think you get a pretty substantial discount by pre-ordering. Word on the street is that the books will ship mid June, but if you pre-order it could be earlier. Yay!! I am so excited! I've never had anything really published in a nice hardbound book. Cheers!

Ancient...

Ok, now I feel bad. The producers from "Creative Juice" on HGTV are casting for a reality type show for crafters. It will be guest based so they are looking for "hip" crafters in all craft and media. Here's the kicker- you have to be 28 or younger. I guess at 30, that makes me ineligible and ancient- oh, and not very hip either. Wanna see some "killer D.I.Y skills" cathie and steve?? Come check out the spa bathroom my husband and I are single handily building in space where there was no bathroom before. Come check out the Italian porcelain tile over the radiant heat floor we installed, or the steam shower, or the stainless steel decorative inlay tile we are laying next weekend. Oh wait he's 32. Does it make him "hipper" that he spins records, skateboards, is a graphic artist and musician? Or how about hanging out with me in my basement studio while I fire glass in 2000 degree kiln to make my one of kind enameled jewelry. That's "killer" -literally. Maybe I can "pass" with my dyed hair, nose ring and tattoo's. Sorry for the rant, but come on, since when is 28 the cutoff for being "hip????" Argggg. But if you are lucky enough to be still young, "hip," wrinkle and walker free, then more power to you and submit. Good luck.
